This is the website of the Patient Safety Initiative in Ireland which provides information, documentation and links to useful resources and developments in Patient Safety in Ireland.
Improving patient safety and quality assurance in healthcare has become the aim of many countries. This is as a result of several factors including:
  • the development by the public of an expectation for safety, high quality healthcare and the desire by the health system to provide same;
  • better understanding of the effectiveness of health care in improving patient outcomes;
  • a number of international studies highlighting the outcome of adverse events in the health system;
  • The experience in many countries of high profile adverse incidents highlighting failings at every level in the healthcare system.
The Report of the Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance "Building a Culture of Patient Safety (2008)" is based around changing practices within the health services to improve quality and safety. The health system in Ireland is undertaking an ambitious programme of change to deliver higher quality and safer services for all our patients and all our staff. This website outlines ongoing patient safety initiatives and activities in Ireland relevant to the area of patient safety.
